Kiyomizu-dera is a historic Buddhist temple located in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, Japan. Originally founded during the Heian period, the temple has suffered from numerous fires and wars, resulting in the destruction of its buildings. The current main hall, designated as a National Treasure, was reconstructed in the early 17th century.
One of the most famous features of Kiyomizu-dera is the “Stage of Kiyomizu” (Kiyomizu no Butai), situated behind the main hall. This 13-meter-high stage is built on the slope of a rocky hillside, harmonizing with the surrounding trees. From this stage, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Kyoto city and the surrounding mountains, especially during autumn when the colorful foliage creates a breathtaking landscape.
The temple grounds are home to many important cultural properties and attractions. Among them are the three-storied pagoda, designated as an Important Cultural Property, and the Tahōtō pagoda, designated as a National Treasure. The grounds also feature numerous sacred springs, with the most famous being the “Kiyomizu no mizu” (literally “water of Kiyomizu”). This pure water has long been regarded as a symbol of health and happiness, attracting many visitors who come to draw the water.
Kiyomizu-dera is an important symbol of Japanese culture and history, attracting numerous tourists and religious devotees. The temple is particularly popular during the spring cherry blossom season when the grounds are adorned in shades of pink.
The area surrounding Kiyomizu-dera is also home to traditional teahouses and souvenir shops, providing visitors with an enjoyable experience.
