Located in Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto City, Higashi Honganji Temple is one of the two main temples of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, alongside Nishi Honganji Temple. Founded in 1602 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, its official name is the “Shinshu main shrine.” The temple complex, including the massive Mieido, is one of the largest wooden structures in the world and a must-see for visitors. Many of the buildings are designated as Important Cultural Properties, making Higashi Honganji a popular tourist destination. The temple grounds also feature the beautiful Shoseien Garden, where visitors can enjoy the harmony of history and nature.
Highlights
The Magnificent Mieido
The centerpiece of Higashi Honganji is the Mieido, which enshrines a portrait of the founder of Jodo Shinshu, Shinran Shonin. This enormous wooden structure measures 76 meters in length, 58 meters in width, and 38 meters in height, making it one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. The vast interior, covered with 927 tatami mats, is truly spectacular and is designated as an Important Cultural Property.
The Golden Amida Hall
South of the Mieido is the Amida Hall, which enshrines the Amida Buddha. The interior is adorned with gold from the ceiling to the pillars, creating a dazzling display. This luxurious decoration represents the Pure Land described in the Amitabha Sutra. The majestic atmosphere of the Amida Hall captivates all who visit.
Shoseien Garden's Seasonal Beauty
Within the temple grounds lies the Shoseien Garden, a 10,000-square-meter garden donated by Tokugawa Iemitsu. This strolling garden is known for its seasonal beauty: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and snowy landscapes in winter. Designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government, Shoseien is a must-visit spot when touring Higashi Honganji.
